The Sprout pencil when is too short to be used it can be recycled in a very unusual way: plant it.
How many people after that a pencil has become too short just throw it in the trash? How to give new life to an object now unusable? Three MIT students found a solution with the Sprout project.
The idea is very simple but also very innovative: it thought to put a seed in a biodegradable capsule at the end of the pencil, usually where is located a rubber, which when planted and with the water contact dissolves allowing the seed to grow and become a real plant.
Several plants are available: aromatic herbs, flowers and even vegetables. Obviously inside the capsule there isn’t only a seed but different, in order to increase the chances of success. In addition, the pencil, to be even more eco-friendly, is made of cedar wood sustainably grown.
The project was initially proposed on Kickstarter, one of the most important crowdfunding platforms, where in a short time managed to achieve its goal thanks to a simple idea but loved by people, many of whom have decided to invest in the initiative.
Not only pencils…
Thanks to the immense success, the project did not end with pencils and crayons but he made two new products always eco-friendly, of course.
One is a sort of “Window Garden”. It is a small box made of recycled cardboard which contains several types of micro-seeds and a compound of hemp instead of the classic loam. Just place it near a window, water it, and soon will be born many small plants.
The other product is instead a very particular type of paper. It is made entirely of recycled paper and the inside contains many small seeds. Once you used the paper, instead of throwing it, just covering it in earth and, also in this case, you will have your plants available in a few simple steps.
